We all would benefit from therapy. We are all crazy
We are all creatures of habit. Some habits not as effective and beneficial as they could be.
If we were to experience a huge trauma or if we are clinically depressed. I will give you an example; Victoria Pendleton. “I wouldn’t be here (Olympics) now if it wasn’t for Steve (Peters, Psychiatrist). After Athens I got a lot of criticism about being too weak. Steve could see I was deeply unhappy with my performance, because I was not doing it for the right reasons. He taught me to care less about other people and more about myself, to be more assertive. The concepts Steve taught would help four out of five girls in everyday life. If I had known these at 14, I would have been much more happy and less full of teen angst”
Victoria Pendleton, Gold Medalist
“Imagine that inside your head there are 100 light bulbs — 30 red and 70 blue. The red don’t help you at all, the blue bring out the best in you. When you come to me, the reds are on, the blues are turned off. I help you to switch off the reds, switch on the blues, show you how you can do that, and then you’ve got to keep them that way. People will say you have changed, but you haven’t, you’ve just learnt some good mental skills. Vicky Pendleton can flick off her anxiety lights when they light up and switch on the lights that tell her she is a confident young woman.”

We would definitely benefit hugely from getting help. However this weeks email is advocating that we would all benefit from therapy. I recently had a session with a Hakomi Therapist and the nuggets of information and quality of the ‘prescription’ was better than anything I could have worked out myself. I’m not the only ‘normal’ functioning person (that hasn’t had a recent huge trauma or depression) that benefited hugely from clinical help.
“I had no problem going to see Steve. (Steve is) The voice of reason.” –Chris Hoy, Olympic Cycling Gold medalist x 4
“Chris Hoy said publicly that I had helped him a lot and helped to get his mindset right. He’s a leader, so everyone followed.”
- Dr Steve Peters, Psychiatrist
Therapy is just like getting a MOT
There are over 400 different types of Psychotherapy, most of which fit into 6 classes; Counseling Behavioural and cognitive behavioural psychotherapy Group therapies Psychodynamic psychotherapy Supportive and experiential psychotherapies Strategic or systemic psychotherapies
“Psychotherapy is an interpersonal process designed to bring about modifications of feelings, cognitions, attitudes and behaviours which have proved troublesome to the person seeking help from the trained professional” –Strupp

Here are a few of my favourite quotes which inspire me;
“I believe all people are nuts. That’s my starting point- that we are all crazy.”

-GB Olympic Team Cyclist
“One of the riders calls it a Mental MOT. He comes in every so often for his mental MOT”- Steve Peters, Psychiatrist, GB Olympic Cycling Team
